A 2200sq.ft. site on the ground floor of a commercial building located in the business hub of Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), Mumbai.
The Captain of a ship holds the ultimate command and responsibility on the vessel. To dine with such a high order makes it a very prestigious aura for the invitee was the brief given by our client for the Sea Food Fine Dine restaurant ‘The Captain’s Table’.
As the name says – The Captain’s table is designed to experience a personal invite to a Captain’s cabin on a cruise liner. Catering to world cuisine, design is inspired from a Ship sailing through the oceans docking at different cities bringing in rich tasteful culture adding classy and rich ambience of a Cruise Liner - a style on board.
After designing the project we visited the dockyard of Alang, Gujarat. We got most of the materials including wood from the ships that are broken at the port. Wooden steps of the staircase, rafters, pulley, steering wheels, ropes, metal, hooks etc. We recycled most of this material and used it in its original form.
The entrance door navigates the customer with a steering wheel which on entering boasts of the hostess table designed with an anchor base.
Entrance partition is an industrial detailing of wood and metal often seen at the floor of the ship, creating a backdrop to the ropes an element used for the navigation of the vessel. The ropes are tied in the figure of 8 knot style (the most important element that the ship crew learns) and is hooked on the floor.
While Planning the Restaurant we had to understand the different moods each space had to be designed with. Entering the main area, the space is zoned in 3 parts; the Central, the VIP and the group. The planning, including the lights, fabrics and furniture gives hierarchy to each seating, governing the classy contemporary and yet eclectic touch of Captain’s Cabin furniture.
The tall glass façade along the three sides of the site describes the tall windows sheered to bring in the sun and openness one feels on board to view the vast ocean outside.
A bold playful screen adds a colorful play to the sophisticated fine dine space which holds niches and shelves various docking memoirs of the ship. It elevates the Captain and his ship’s esteem by showcasing the number of cities this vessel has been steered to and docked at.
